You Don't Need the Perfect Prompt
Dec 21, 2024
The first question practitioners always ask me when it comes to using ChatGPT is:
"How can I write better prompts?"
The problem with this question is that it assumes there’s a definitive right or wrong way to write prompts—that we should strive for some unattainable perfect prompt.
I can see why so many people fall into this trap. Maybe you've seen an ad in your social feed claiming to have the "only mega prompt you need" or the "prompt chain that will change your business." Sounds complicated! It can make you feel like only techies or crazy smart people can figure these things out.
It's' not true.
Our brains love to play tricks on us.
We actually have a natural human tendency to overestimate the complexity of unfamiliar tools (like every time I’m at a new Airbnb trying to make sense of the universal remote lol). Of course, I'm a Gen X-er, and it seems the younger kids have less of an issue with this, but I digress.
Point is that the myth of the "perfect prompt" will leave you stuck in a cycle of procrastination. Whereas you COULD be leaning into using A.I. to craft your next email sequence, social media post, or blog idea—instead this myth is delaying the growth of your practice.
Here’s the thing: leveraging A.I. is simply about showing up and letting the tool work WITH you. For health & wellness practitioners, it’s a massive opportunity. It's an opportunity to save time on content creation and craft energetically aligned copy fast.
So, are you with me?
Let’s ditch the “perfect prompt” pressure and shift into action mode. I always say that motivation follows action, and I hope the strategies I'm about to share will help you feel confident to open up that ChatGPT window (ideally your Custom GPT if you've done my training!) and actually get some sh*t DONE.
How to Get Better Results from ChatGPT That Have Nothing to Do with the Perfect Prompt
1: Lead the Conversation
To get the best results from ChatGPT, you need to take the lead. It's like you're the director of the project—the one setting the vision and guiding the work. If you approach ChatGPT as though it’s your assistant, you’ll get far better results than if you rely on it to come up with everything from scratch.
You don't have to start with clarity.
You just have to start with a messy brain dump of your thoughts. What message do you want to get across in the piece of content you're working on?
For example, let’s say you’re creating an Instagram carousel about gut health. Instead of asking ChatGPT to "write 5 pages for a carousel post about gut health," take charge and explain the specific angle you want to take, such as "Help me create a carousel post about why taking too many supplements can interfere with healing your gut." Then, share a stream of consciousness—as if you're out for your morning walk taking a voice memo of your ideas.
Really. This works.
It works for two reasons. First, it brings your thought leadership to the table. It starts with the ideas you know you want to teach, your signature phrases, and your unique perspective —things ChatGPT could never guess on its own. Second, it frees up your mental energy. When you’re not obsessing over how to make the words sound polished or where to put commas, you really can let your ideas flow from the inside out.
When I say you can use ChatGPT to save time and write high-converting copy without sacrificing your intuitive edge, I am being literal. What you might find (trust me on this!) is that the process actually sharpens that edge.
2: Copywriting Co-Creation
The idea of copywriting co-creation is similar to the idea of leading the conversation, but it takes it to the next level. While it is you leading the show, it is also you allowing ChatGPT to do the heavy lifting. The result? You save time and mental energy while crafting something uniquely yours.
One way to do this is to start with a messy draft—seriously, the messier, the better. Write out your ideas for an email, caption, or post without worrying about grammar or flow. Then, paste it into ChatGPT and say, “Make this better.” That’s it. No fancy prompt engineering. I’ve been shocked on many occasions that the output turns out to be spot on.
Another trick is to take ChatGPT’s suggestions and layer on your personal touch. For example, if it generates a social media caption, you can edit it to include your signature phrases like “80% is enough” or add anecdotes from your own experience.
And now, with ChatGPT’s Canvas feature, co-creation is smoother than ever. Canvas lets you and ChatGPT work on the same document in real-time, making the process feel like you’re sitting side-by-side with an assistant who’s eager to help polish your ideas. (Fun fact: this blog post? Totally written using co-creation in Canvas!)
The beauty of co-creation is that it blends your thought leadership with ChatGPT’s efficiency. By working together, you’ll create content that not only sounds great but also feels true to you.
3: Know Your Brand Vibe
Your brand vibe is the energy, tone, and style that defines how you communicate and how your audience feels when they interact with your content. The magic happens when every piece of content you co-create with ChatGPT aligns with that vibe.
Start by grounding yourself in your signature phrases and things you say often. These are those little nuggets that make your content unmistakably yours. For me, it’s saying things like “energetically aligned copy” or “motivation follows action" or "the vibe of your content becomes the vibe of your biz." When ChatGPT generates an output, I make sure to infuse these elements back in.
Another tip? Go back and forth with ChatGPT until it gets the right tone. You can say something like, “Make this sound more conversational and fun to read.” You don't have to get the prompt perfect from the start. You just need to go back and forth until you like the output better.
And if you don't have a clue what your brand vibe even is? I got you. Check out my Custom GPT Starter Pack for Wellness Practitioners. It will help you get that clarity and also train ChatGPT to get it too.
It's a Practice Not a Perfect
There is no such thing as the perfect prompt. By leading the conversation, co-creating with the tool, and creating a brand vibe kit to train ChatGPT, you can create content that feels good to you and connects with your clients. As my yoga instructor says, “it’s a practice not a perfect.”
